Common questions
How do I practice?
Listen to the model, tap record and say it back — recording stops by itself — then read your score. Chunkly grades each word and shows the exact phoneme to fix. For long sentences, try building from the end: practise the last chunk, then add the one before it, until the whole sentence flows.
Is my voice recording private?
Yes. The mic is used only while you record, recognition and scoring run entirely on your device, and recordings stay on your phone and are deleted automatically. Nothing is uploaded to us. See the Privacy Policy for the full detail.
Scoring or the microphone isn't working.
Check that Chunkly has Microphone and Speech Recognition permission in Settings → Chunkly. On-device recognition also needs the matching language to be available on your device. Restarting the app after granting permission usually helps.
What's free, and what does the purchase add?
Content, not features. The free version runs every part of the app end to end — scoring included — with the opening part of each section unlocked: 10 phoneme lessons, 2 phonics groups, 5 sentence sets, 3 word themes and 3 minimal pairs, all repeatable without limit. The full version is a one-time purchase ($9.99 in the U.S. store; your region's price shows in the App Store) that unlocks everything else, permanently.
Where did an item I finished go?
Once your best score on an item reaches 85 it counts as mastered, and mastered items step out of the practice queue so your time goes to what still needs work. You can always revisit them from the content lists.
How accurate is the score?
Scores come from on-device speech recognition, so treat them as a guide rather than a verdict. A recogniser can occasionally "correct" a mispronounced word back to the expected one — that is why Chunkly also flags unclear words and tracks your sounds over the long run. The trend matters more than any single attempt.
Is this a subscription? What if I switch phones?
It's a one-time purchase — nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel. On a new device, tap "Restore Purchase" in the app with the same Apple Account and the full version comes back at no extra cost.
Which languages does the app support?
The interface and all guidance are in Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean, following your system language (switchable in Settings). The guidance isn't just translated — the pronunciation advice changes with your native language, because each group struggles with different sounds. The pronunciation taught is American English.
Where does the learning content come from?
Pronunciations come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary (Carnegie Mellon University); word definitions and frequencies draw on ECDICT and wordfreq. Everything ships inside the app — see the in-app licenses page for details.
